RM Team North Activity
- Deputy Vice President Meetings in the North – Manchester City Council
On 10 March Deputy Vice President, Stephanie Boyce met with the City Solicitor, the Deputy City Solicitor and other chief officers from Manchester City Council. The meeting was a positive introduction and included an interesting discussion on the importance of the profession in-house, D&I, social mobility and LawTech.
Future Law Society Events - Update in light of Coronavirus
The spread of the Coronavirus Covid-19 is deeply concerning for us all. The Law Society takes the health and safety of its staff, members, clients and other visitors to its offices and events very seriously. In light of the increasing number of people affected by the virus and acknowledging the role we all have to play in limiting its impact, the Law Society has taken the decision to cancel all face to face events until the end of July 2020.
We are extremely grateful for the amount of work and incredible investment staff and members put into organising Law Society events. To ensure this is not wasted we are currently reviewing online alternatives including podcasts, webinars and live events. Your event organiser will be in contact with you soon to discuss the options available.
Anyone who has already registered and paid to attend an event will be contacted and provided with a full refund. Speakers and sponsors will also be contacted about alternative formats and ways to remain involved.
We do not know if events will be impacted beyond July 2020 nor how long the current situation will last. We will continue to monitor the situation daily and will keep staff and members informed as more information comes to light.

Law Society Policy Update
- Family Public Law Project - Pilot
The Family Public Law project, which is part of the wider HMCTS Reform Programme, is currently piloting a new digital system which will support efficient and effective inter-agency working so the service can be conducted digitally from start to finish.
HMCTS are currently opening the service up to all professional users nationally, through a phased roll out approach through to June 2020. As a part of this approach they want to ensure they are engaging directly with solicitors, local authorities and independent bodies. They have created a basecamp area (accessible once involved in the pilot) to provide a space which allows a ‘critical friend’ function, where feedback can be freely given to ensure this new service is useable for those who will be intending to use it.
As this service has been created with users in mind, alongside providing support as you navigate the new system, HMCTS hope to get your feedback on the service, and test ideas for additional services and approaches.

- Criminal Legal Aid Review Package – Summary of Law Society Response
The Law Society has outlined its concerns on the Ministry of Justice's proposed changes to the criminal legal aid fee schemes, as part of the Criminal Legal Aid Review. Details of the response are here:
- Ongoing Competence – LSB Call for Evidence
The Legal Services Board (LSB) has launched a call for evidence into ongoing competence in the legal profession. Ongoing competence is a key component for any profession, and the Law Society would like the profession’s initial views to shape its response, particularly in highlighting areas to focus on.

The Law Society social mobility ambassadors scheme promotes role models from non-traditional backgrounds who have achieved their ambitions and are willing to support their peers within the profession and prospective solicitors. If you'd like to be an ambassador for 2020, submit your application by Friday 3 April.

· Trainee Solicitors – New Recommended Minimum Salary
The Law Society recommends that providers of training contracts should pay their trainees £22,541 in London and £19,992 outside London.
